NEWSSeptember 8, 2011. With great pleasure we announce that - many years in the making - the new album by the Consumer Goods
is about to be released on a (seriously) unsuspecting world. The launch will be on Thursday, September
22, at the Tranzac club in Toronto. Doors open at 7:30 and the show starts at 8:00 and will be over by 11:00.
Opening up the evening will be our friends and co-conspirators The Folk and Chang-a-lang.
The record is thoughtful
and accomplished, a mature document of a band engaged in the world, hitting its stride musically and emotionally, and grappling
with complicated social and political questions. Featuring current and former members of Wilco, Blue Rodeo, Gord Downie
and the Country of Miracles and the Rheostatics, "But We Don't Shoot Pistols?"
is sure to be a landmark in the Consumer Goods' already well-established catalogue. Fans
of bands like Sun Kil Moon, The Magnolia Electric Co, and Neil Young will immediately recognize the influence of their buzzing,
brooding warmth in this ambitious project. You can listen to four new songs here.
Those of us who were in Toronto during last summer's G20 police crackdown
will recognize some moments on the record as drawing from that experience. In "Agent of the State," an older
couple find themselves radicalized by the experience of having young activists stolen from their shared home in a midnight
raid, shocked by a judge's insistence that, as surieties for the accused, they have become 'agents of the state.'
Taken as a whole, the record represents a broader meditation on violence and displacement, and the adjustments people make
in response - which are sometimes themselves violent. In another track, a character takes up a revolver, invoking
the anti-colonial writing of Lyotard and Fanon, and finds herself re-born in the violent struggle for a free Algeria.
Sometimes, as in "Gliese 581," solace is found in the fantasy of escape, in the possibility of building a new civilization
on a new planet. Over 13 tracks, various characters interact with injustice and resistance in a variety of ways; while
there may not always be resolution, there is recognition that resolution must be the goal, that theorizing and understanding
injustice is a necessary step in resisting it.
You should definitely pick up a copy of this record. As Rob
Ford is setting up to cut even more arts funding in Toronto, it behoves me to note that we have been consistently denied
funding for our projects, and this record has left us with a massive and terrifying debt. Selling you these songs
is the only way we can make that back, so please consider setting aside twenty bucks to make this a successful evening for
you and for us! As a special bonus, the first 30 purchasers of the new album will recieve a (VERY) limited edition,
homemade CD single for "Gliese 581" featuring two unreleased tracks and amazing handmade artwork.
March 23, 2011. After about a month and half's work, we're pleased to announce that the new record is on
the verge of being ready. "But We Don't Shoot Pistols?" was recorded over a two week period at the Gas
Station Recording Camp on the Toronto Islands with Dale Morningstar. Each day, we'd catch the ferry from the city, spend
the day in a converted portable schoolroom playing songs, then catch the last ferry home over the icy lake.
Most of the tracks were recorded live, in a big room facing the beach. Some days it snowed, other days it was sunny
and mild, and some days it pissed down rain. We were frequently joined by CJ the cat, so named because his mother's
name was "Creamy" and no one felt that family name ought to be carried on. We ate sandwiches and drank beer
and told stories and made music until it felt as right or as wrong as we liked it. We got help from Dave Clark (Rheostatics,
Gord Downie) and Bob Egan (Wilco, Blue Rodeo) and Susanna Weins (Use Every Part of the Deer). After Dale mixed the record,
we sent it to Harris Newman in Montreal, who lent it a fresh set of ears for mastering. Now you're caught up.
Plans for the release are in the works - it was a costly record to make and we'll be yanking all of your arms to buy it so
that we can pay our rent. November 11, 2010. A quick thank you to the good people who made last night's show at the Central a successful
venture. Janine MacLoed's innuendo-soaked harp performance was fantastic, and the good people of Sunrise, Oh Sunrise
did not dissapoint with their energy and overall lickishness. For all you Sudburians clamboring for a chance
to see the band at Little Montreal later this month, please be aware that this will be a solo acoustic show. Continue
to clambor [I feel like I am either misspelling or misusing this word] but do so armed with a complete set of facts.
See you then. September 30, 2010. The extraordinarily kind people at ChartAttack have decided that
"Hockey Night in Afghanada" is the best song ever. I don't think they've heard "la Loba" by Shakira, but let's not tell them. Either way, the result was
that I got to answer some questions about Don Cherry and, as you might expect, I had a few thoughts. Peruse at
your own risk/leisure. September 25, 2010. The long,
slow march of progress continues. We're thrilled to announce that the pieces are beginning to fall together for the
production of our fourth LP, tentatively titled "But We Don't Shoot Pistols." We'll be ferrying over to the
Toronto Islands in February 2011 to record the new songs at the Gas Station Recording Camp with the legendary Dale Morningstar
[Thrush Hermit, Rock Plaza Central, Gord Downie, Julie Doiron, godspeedyou!blackemperor... the list goes on.] I've been
listening to records with Dale's name on them for many years, so it will be pretty damn cool to hand him the keys to this
always-leaky ship. In the meantime, we're pretty close to sorting out some details on distribution
and promotion for the new record, and we are hopeful that we'll be able to get some support from whatever is left of Canada's
arts funding council. [According to Stephen Harper, we don't need to support independant/poor bands, because we've got
Nickelback.] With a little luck, we'll be able to access some of that limited supply and put it towards this project.
It will be really nice to put some real resources behind it, for a change. So stay tuned
for shows within a one-hour driving radius of Toronto over the next few months. And, naturally, we'll be touring the
smack out of this country again in the warmer months. Cannons at the ready! August 26, 2010. Since the last update a few things have happened. First, the Shipley solo record was released to modest but
appreciative audiences in Toronto and Winnipeg. Given the nature of the project, it didn't seem right to do a lot of
promotion, so the record flew mostly under the radar except in the obvious circles, where it was recieved either as a therapuetic
document of a moment or a narcissistic celebration of an event that oughtn't have been celebrated. The highlight, for
me, came months later when I got a hilariously backhanded compliment: "you know, Shipley, so what if people ripped you
up for it? I thought it was a great record." This was to be expected though. We did get some very positive
coverage, especially in Winnipeg from our friends at Uptown, and the record actually made a dent in Canadian roots/blues charts,
hitting #7 in May 2010 and charting at 8 different stations across the country that month. It was good to get the record out. Damn thing took way too long and by the time it
was ready I wanted to close the door. Thankfully the next thing was right there waiting: a new Toronto band, ready to
pick up the loose ends of what had been the 2008 Consumer Goods tour [ended in hospitalization] and build something new.
Something really amazing had run its course: the Cabaret record was as far as I could take cynical snark-pop.
After 'Hockey Night in Afghanada' and 'Serve and Protect, Uh!' everything I tried to write sounded like a ripoff. And
somewhere along the way, ironic had become the new black. What I was doing didn't seem creative and clever anymore.
In fact, I felt like I was slipping into catering to a hipster set that wants to wrap itself in ironic detachment because
the world is complicated. "Politics" was too earnest. So, I had to get earnest. Thus began a new
iteration of the band, with some new members, new songs, new jeans, a new guitar and an additional songwriter in Jesse Carlson.
This lineup debuted in May 2010 and played a anti-G20 fundraiser before taking to the streets to get pounded by cops for three
days. On June 23, we played to a busy Boat and closed with the song "Here In The Colony" in which all four
of us sing "I got friends, beaten by the cops - the older we get, the beatin' never stops." Sure enough, we
found ourselves on the defensive in a full-frontal police assault that began with beatings and has continued with arrests
and charges throughout the following months. It was overwhelming and we had to take a little time off. Over the past month, we all got the hell out of Toronto: Jesse and Greg
went east, Cosby played in a cover band, and I went on tour with True Hussars (aka Lonely Hunters, aka the Horribly Awfuls.)
We did two weeks in Southern Ontario and Quebec and this time no one got injured! It was the best possible way to spend
an August, and Gareth, Matt, Hild and I ripped around in a rent-a-wreck, climbing Scotch mountains, calling nice people a
cock, falling down the other side, apologizing, playing great shows and one piss-poor one, meeting lovely people, eating vegatables
and watching Clone High. The True Hussars record will be ready soon and is well worth the wait. Now it's the fall and time to get back at it. I've resolved myself
to learn how to fill out those grant applications to get some of the money that shitty bands always seem to get. There's
a record that needs to be made, drawn from a catalogue of about 20 new songs that pack a much more satisfying punch than I
am used to. More shows and details will appear over the next month as I try to climb my way out of a pending eviction
notice by teaching introductory social sciences classes to would-be business students. FML! February 21, 2010. Well okay, it has been awhile since I updated this page. The big news is that
the new Tyler Shipley solo record is coming in less than two weeks. So, you know, check it out. Links to buy the

8, 2008. Tour de Farce 2008 is off to a great
start! Thanks to everyone who has helped us along the way, there are many of you, and you all make it a little easier
to do what we do. We've had media coverage in nearly every major city out west, and we're expecting some buzz in the
east pretty soon. Be sure to catch us as we work out way through Southern Ontario and Quebec over the next few weeks! July 10, 2008. As you may have noticed, the rumours of an exciting campaign to embarrass CBC sports
were all true! The timing of Hockey Night in Canada's dropping their iconic theme song couldn't have been better
- the Consumer Goods have stepped up to fill the void and we hope you will appreciate our efforts. Our video
- disqualified by the Hockey Anthem Challenge organizers - is available for viewing here and we're thrilled to note that in just three days it has been viewed over 600 times and recieved
a rating of 4.5 stars out of 5. Please take the
time to check out the video and show it to your friends. The 'comment' function is available to you on youtube, so if
you would like to agree or disagree with what we're doing, there is space for you to do so. Fundamentally, we are asking people to question whether it is alright that CBC sports legitimates
the prevailing 'support the troops' mentality by relentlessly linking our national game with our national army. Don
Cherry - an openly racist, sexist and homophobic public figure - uses his weekly session to mourn the passing of 'our boys'
in Afghanistan, while never pausing once to mention the countless lives 'our boys' have taken in our continued occupation
of that sovereign country. Ron MacLean, though standing in as Cherry's 'moral conscience,' echoes and reinforces much
of Cherry's message - that Canadian soldiers are heroes, that their General Hillier deserves to be treated as an icon, and
that our war is fundamentally to be supported without question. CBC's programming consistently pursues the link between
hockey and militarism, describing hockey players as 'warriors' and hosting 'tickets for troops' events at hockey games.
Given that more than half of all Canadians do not support
the occupation of Afghanistan, and given that it necessarily entails a program of racist and orientalist butchery in a foreign
land, is it appropriate for our national broadcaster - funded in part by ordinary Canadians - to lend its unequivocal support
to this military adventure on its most popular and influential program? We plead "fuck, no!"
